The Freedom of Forgiveness

Feb 22, 2026    Pastor Keith Alexander

his message teaches that forgiveness is not about excusing wrong or removing consequences, but about releasing control and reclaiming your freedom. When we refuse to forgive, we position ourselves as judge and jury, allowing bitterness to harden our hearts and create distance not only between us and others, but between us and God. The only control God has assigned to us is self-control—not control over outcomes, circumstances, or other people’s behavior. Using Jesus washing Judas’ feet as the model, we see that forgiveness is about remaining faithful to our identity in Christ, not about changing the offender; Judas still betrayed Jesus, but Jesus refused to let betrayal master Him. In the same way, forgiveness declares, “What you did will not rule me.” Though it may not always restore the relationship, forgiveness softens our hearts, restores intimacy with God, and ultimately frees the forgiver.
